Here's a question for you. Would you agree with the following statement: Jazz music was originated by African-Americans in New Orleans, but the term "jazz" referring to a musical genre was probably originated by whites in Chicago.

Yes, I see that DIxon is not very close to Chicago--about 90 minutes drive--but it's way closer than New Orleans!

I believe the following is the second oldest known citation for the word "jazz" denoting a musical genre:
1916 Dixon (Ill.) Evening Leader 8 Apr. 1/3 (NewspaperArchive)
The Sterling Jazz band will play in the bazaar held by the Ladies of the G. A. R. at Rosbrook Hall tonight.
