[Ads-l] Second Earliest Citation for "Jazz" as a Musical Genre

I had intended the posting below to be sent privately to Lewis Porter rather than to the ADS-L list (it seems that almost every posting I make has some kind of glitch).  But I would welcome input about this question by people other than Lewis.

Here's a question for you.  Would you agree with the following statement:  Jazz music was originated by African-Americans in New Orleans, but the term "jazz" referring to a musical genre was probably originated by whites in Chicago.
