1982 Philadelphia Daily News 29 Oct. 43/1 (Newspapers.com)  The spoken poetry is scored by a DJ who mechanically shifts a record forward and back on a turn table, scratching out a grinding beat.

1983 Daily News (New York) 3 Apr. (Newspapers.com)  Playing records, however, is only a part of the DJ's chores.  Top dogs like Bambaataa ... are turntable technologists ... intentionally "scratching" records to the beat.
