"Those who have seen war will never stop seeing it."
There are a handful of online exx. and a few more in Newspapers.com
dating back to 2002. InternetArchive has a few more.
The original words were uttered by Vietnam War journalist Joseph L.
Galloway, co-writer (with Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore) of both the
best-seller _We Were Soldiers Once...and Young_ (N.Y.: Random House, 1992)
and the 2002 film version, _We Were Soldiers_.
In a brief voiceover, Galloway says:
"We who have seen war, will never stop seeing it. In the silence of the
night, we will always hear the screams. So this is our story, for we were
soldiers once, and young."
The passage cannot be found in the Internet Archive digitized copy of the
book, but millions have seen the movie.
The line may have been partly suggested by George Santayana's well-known
aphorism, "Only the dead have seen the end of war."
