Jon Lighter is probably right that the 1893 citation for "fakelore" is a typo. But here are two major authentic antedatings of Dorson's claim that he coined the word in 1949 / 1950 (Charles Doyle pointed out in an article that Dorson himself was not accurate about the dating).
1892 Boston Daily Globe 29 Dec. 4/5 (Newspapers.com) Col. Higginson thought that the traditions of Maine should be collected at once, as the boarding-houses are fast increasing there, and they employ under-graduates as waiters. These under-graduates have a great Power of Invention, and their tales told to the Indians are often given by the Indians as Indian traditions.
1905 Sunday World-Herald (Omaha) 13 Aug. 24/5 (Newspapers.com) Indian Fake Lore Disclosed by a Nebraska Man.
