1903 New York American 6 July 1 / 4 (GenealogyBank)  (heading) "Invisible Man" Overcomes an Employe in the Erie Railroad Station to Get Into Safe That Stood Open.

NOTE: H. G. Wells of course published a book titled "The Invisible Man" in 1897, but the OED decided not to use the book as a citation.
