According to Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao (now nominated for
the permanent position) "There's a place in Monterey, California
called 'Lovers' Point. The original name was 'Lovers of Christ Point,
but now it's become — they took out the Christ, it's 'Lovers' Point,'
and it's really — Monterey's a very dark place now, a lot of
witchcraft, and the Wiccan community has really taken over there."
But inspection of Newspapers.com and GenealogyBank doesn't reveal a
single example of "Lovers of Christ Point." The few examples of
"Lovers of Jesus Point" don't begin until 1968.
"Lovers' Point," however, is attested as early as 1888 (Pacific Grove
Review, June 23, p. 3).
