You are right. We are stuck.
Should we then rather contemplate an inter-Austronesian borrowing than a
filiation from a common PAN ancestor?
I wonder whether apart from hunting, fleets of boats didn't track/follow
herds of whales to discover sea currents, schools of fish or, perhaps, where
these somehow fabulous animals came from.
