new encyclopedia with Austronesian sketches

Description: The Encyclopedia of the World's Languages, Past and Present is
the product of seven years of compilation from the work of nearly two
hundred world renowned scholars in linguistics. It was created with the
intention of providing both the general public and specialists in
linguistics with an authoritative reference volume which encapsulates a wide
assortment of structured data for many of the world's ethnolinguistic
groups.

Unlike other books of its kind, each entry is written by one or more
recognized experts. The coverage provided for each language includes basic
outlines of the phonetic, phonological, morphological, and syntactic
systems, as well as extra-linguistic information such as the history of each
ethno-linguistic group, sociolinguistic contact information, and political
factors that shape the development and govern the identity of each group.

Language data in the volume are glossed in an interlinearized format, using
established conventions and abbreviations. In the majority of the entries,
the language data are given using standard orthography, instead of IPA
representation, since phonetic rules and phonological alternations are
provided for each language. Each article closes with a select bibliography
for further research.
