[An-lang] Austronesian After Dark – trial hangout next Tuesday night (Dec 30)

Dear friends and colleagues,

Happy holidays!

I'd like to start a relaxed, informal online series for our Austronesian linguistics community: Austronesian After Dark ('After Dark' for short).

The goal is to build connections and a sense of community – especially among linguists in their 30s and 40s who often work quite independently – while warmly welcoming colleagues from all generations (senior scholars, early-career researchers, and students alike).

The idea is to create a comfortable, grown-up space – something like a stylish, laid-back club where people can drop in, listen quietly if they prefer, chat casually, or share thoughts over a drink. No pressure, just good company and occasional light conversation about our shared interests.

We’ll aim to meet roughly once a month via Zoom (with Discord for ongoing chat, coordination, and voice channels – we plan to use Discord voice chat as well for more casual hangouts and drink sessions).

  *   Most months: pure hangout – bring your favorite beverage, share stories, or just relax and listen.
  *   Every second month: one or two short, informal talks (15–20 min) followed by open discussion – nothing too formal.

A little fun rule: Feel free to use your real name or a playful nickname on Discord/Zoom – it adds to the relaxed vibe! (Even if voices might give us away when we speak Suggested themes: islands, cocktails, proto-forms, or whatever inspires you.)

  *   Time: 21:00 JST (Tokyo/Osaka) / 20:00 CST (Taiwan) / 13:00 CET (Europe) / 12:00 GMT (UK) / 07:00 EST (US East) – just 30 minutes (feel free to drop in late or leave early).
  *   No talks, just casual end-of-year chat and drinks! Perfect for a quick holiday toast.
