Subject: dikka query
A colleague is teaching a course that covers Islamic architecture,
and he is uncertain about the use of the piece of furniture called
the 'dikka' which can be found in numerous medieval Cairo mosques,
including the Sultan Hassan mosque. It is a kind of raised platform
that is out in the open (unlike the minbar, for example, which is up
near the mihrab near the wall). Does anyone know either the
etymology of this word, or the function of the item of furniture?
Thanks,
Dil
