Subject:U of Maryland Arabic Flagship Summer Institute
The University of Maryland and Arabic Flagship Program is pleased to
announce our summer 2012 Arabic Summer Institute.
These programs will run from June 2nd - August 4th, 2012 and feature the
following:
* An Intensive nine-week summer program equivalent to one full academic
year (up to 12 credit hours)
* Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced level training
* One-on-one time with language partners for additional support,
speaking practice, and tutoring
* Competitive Summer Institute Scholarships available to help offset the
cost of attendance
* A focus on building listening comprehension skills through media and
current events
* Proximity to Washington, DC, allowing for a rich calendar of weekly
cultural events and lectures, as well as the opportunity to collaborate
with government and business professionals
* Small class sizes, 22 contact hours per week, and dedicated faculty
and staff members
The Arabic Language Summer Institute implements an innovative language
curriculum which is simultaneously task-based and content-based, creating a
rich learning environment that simulates immersion while on campus.
Students effectively live in an Arabic-speaking environment during their
time at Maryland, with approximately five hours a day of structured
language-learning experiences. Students also gain language exposure with
one-on-one language partner hours with an Arabic native speaker.
The average student attending will have made a serious, long-term
commitment to learning Arabic, will be prepared to study intensively for
nine weeks, and be performing well academically at his or her home
institution.
Applications are due March 15, 2012.
