The Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (
http://qatar.sfs.georgetown.edu) seeks to appoint two faculty members in
the field of Arabic language instruction, as part of an expansion in the
field of Arabic language, literature and culture, including a path-breaking
new Initiative in Arabic for Heritage Learners. The successful candidates
will have the opportunity to collaborate on the development of the Arabic
language program at SFS-Q, which currently offers courses in both Modern
Standard Arabic as a non-native language and in the Heritage/Native
Speakers track. Applicants should have a graduate degree in Arabic Language
or a related field (Ph.D preferred), native fluency in Arabic, near-native
fluency in English, and have demonstrated high-quality undergraduate
teaching at all levels. Applicants should be familiar with
proficiency-oriented and content-based instruction and with the development
of teaching materials. The teaching load is three courses or nine credit
hours per semester. While a research record is not required, and while
appraisal and promotion will be predominantly based on performance in
teaching and teaching-related activity, research related to the subject
will be valued. The appointment is intended to be long-term, with
three-year rolling contracts renewable subject to satisfactory review.
Successful candidates will become members of a collegial team of core-track
and instructional faculty, who are committed to delivering a rich
curriculum of instructional and content courses.
All applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae and
three letters of reference. Applications for this position must be received
via Georgetown's online application management system at
https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/2260. Faxed or emailed applications
will not be accepted. Review of applications will begin on 26 November and
will continue until the position is filled.
Compensation and expatriate benefits packages are excellent and SFS-Q
provides generous research support and support for conference travel. Other
terms of employment are extremely competitive and include housing,
transportation, school fees for children from Kindergarten through
secondary school, and health insurance.
Questions about the online application system should be directed to Nick
Starvaggi at nhs22 at georgetown.edu. Queries about the position should be
directed to Dr. Kai-Henrik Barth, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, at
khb3 at georgetown.edu. Georgetown University is an Equal Opportunity,
Affirmative Action Employer fully dedicated to achieving a diverse faculty
and staff. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply and will
receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, sexual
orientation, age, religion, national origin, marital status, veteran
status, disability or other categories protected by law.
The positions described in this advertisement are part of a large,
multi-year strategic expansion of the faculty of the School of Foreign
Service in Qatar. Faculty at any rank in the discipline noted above as well
as other social science/humanities disciplines, in particular political
science/IR, are invited to express interest at any time via
GrowSFSQ at georgetown.edu.
