I wonder if the millions of hits for "filal" were seeking not the plural of
"villa" but rather the ubiquitously re-emerged term "fuluul" meaning
"relics of the ancien regime", a term rampant after the Arab Spring in
Egypt. I remember searching myself for the origins of that word.
Here are some other borrowed word plurals from Cairene: bougie/bougihaat
(spark plugs); kalaks/kalaksaat (car horn); jerkin/jaraakin (jerry
cans);jupe/jupaat (skirts); baldakaana/baldakanaat (baldequin or in
English, that cornice that hides the top of a curtain); abajoora/abajoraat
(lamps, from French); lamba/lomad (lightbulbs); caravatta/caravattaat
(neckties); pullover/pulovraat (sweaters); lorry/loriihaat (trucks);
biskilitta/biskilittaat (bikes); motosikl/motosiklaat (motorcycles);
esharp/esharpaat (scarf, French); boucle/bouclaat (rollers for the hair)
