Dear Yuriko,

You should put it at the location of the pause or tone dip, where you had been putting a comma, which means after Mommy in the first case. The second case is fine. I hadn't thought about the third case, but there also it should follow.

Yes, the form &=imit:airplane is good. Note that it uses the equals and not the colon after the ampersand. However, to be more explicit, you could have &=imit:sound:airplane. I am guessing that the actual sound being made is not as important as the fact that the child is trying to imitate the sound of the airplane.

Hi Brian,

I am teaching the CHAT in my class this semester and I have a couple of

questions about new symbols.

In the window new symbol list, one student found that‡is indicated

as vocative. Does this mean that we should use this symbol indicating

a vocative use of proper names or kinship terms like the following example?

*CHI: ‡Mommy give it to me.

*CHI: Look ‡Mommy.

*CHI: ‡Mommy.

I used to transcribe above like:

*CHI: Mommy, give it to me.

*CHI: Look, Mommy.

*CHI: Mommy.

%com: vocative

Another question is the use of &:imit for the imitation of sounds.

For instance, if the child tries to imitate an airplane sound, can we

transcribe it like the following example?

*CHI: ween &:imit:airplane .

I used to transcribe this like:

*CHI: ween [= air plane sound].

Please let me know. Thank you.

Yuriko
