Dear Toh An,
These are interesting questions, but it will take awhile to make sure I understand the way in which you want to define each of these 5 measures. Some, such as #2 and #5 are easy to compute from a transcript with a %mor line. Others require a grammatical dependency analysis on a %gra line. If you are new to CLAN, I would recommend starting by learning how to compute the two easiest ones and then going from there to the more difficult ones. After #2 and #5, the next most doable would be #4, although it would take quite a lot of fussing. The most difficult are #1 and #3, although #3 depends a lot on your definitions.
The more difficult ones such as #1 and #3 can also be handled by using hand coding to enter clause markers or postcodes.
If you want details about how to begin with the first two, you can write to me directly (macw at cmu.edu)<mailto:macw at cmu.edu)> and I will give you instructions.

Subject: Question on CLAN calculations for 5 measures
Dear all,
I am new to CLAN and I have questions about CLAN calculations for the following measures:
1. Clause Length
2. Finite Verb Ratio
3. Sentence Types
4. NP Length
5. Use of tenses
1. To calculate clause length, we need freq with extra %tier yielding the number of clauses.
(a) How do we get “freq with extra %tier yielding the number of clauses”?
(b) What is the extra %tier yielding the number of clauses.
(c) Is there a special formula we use to calculate the number of clauses?
(d) What is the formula to calculate clause length in CLAN?
2. Finite verb ratio (words per finite verb), we need freq with extra %tier yielding the number of finite verbs
(a) How do we get “freq with extra %tier yielding the number of finite verbs”?
(b) What is the extra %tier yielding the number of finite verbs.
(c) Is there a special formula we use to calculate the number of finite verbs?
(d) What is the formula to calculate finite verb ratio in CLAN?
3. Sentence types (complex, compound,…), we need freq with extra %tier yielding the number of clause types
(a) How do we get “freq with extra %tier yielding the number of clause types”?
(b) What is the extra %tier yielding the number of clause types?
(c) Is there a special formula we use to calculate the number of clause types?
(d) What is the formula to calculate frequency of different sentence types (complex, compound) in CLAN?
4. NP length, we need freq with extra %tier yielding the number of NPs and the number of words in all NPs
(a) How do we get “freq with extra %tier yielding the number of NPs and the number of words in all NPs”?
(b) What is the extra %tier yielding the number of NPs and the number of words in all NPs?.
(c) Is there a special formula we use to calculate the number of NPs and the number of words in all NPs?
(d) What is the formula to calculate NP length in CLAN?
5. Use of tenses, we need an extra %tier so we can use freq
(a) What does it mean by “extra %tier”?
(b) What is the “extra %tier” and how do we calculate it?
(c) What is the formula to calculate frequency of past tense and present tense in CLAN?
