1) the list is smokin. way to go, folks.

2) particular apologies to scott tyler and mcleven over matters i said i'd
attend to but haven't had time. hugely busy. will attempt soonest.

 3) this is not quite chinook stuff, but close. it came to mind following
drobertson's "cj words for other whites" msg.

it's from the jesup north pacific expedition, james teit's contributions on
the shuswap, 1909.

there's an exhaustive list of northern shuswap terms for neighbouring
nations, including terms for the yakima, blackfeet, cree - suggesting those
northern shuswaps were a pretty cosmopolitan bunch of people- but also terms
for "whites in general," "american whites," "first whites seen" (i.e
hudson's bay and northwest company people) "negroes," and "chinese."

whites in general is se'ma or sa'ma (i.e shama, with which many of us are
familiar), and american whites show up as suie'pmux ("evidently from the
sahaptin suya'p"). hbc etc. whites ("first whites") are spetekloe (this is
absent teit's archaic orthographic symbols), which teit gives as "real
ancients," and two other terms for "first whites" which teit translates as
"other-side country" and "people from the country on the other side (of the
rockies)".

i really liked the conception of "negroes." i give it from teit in full:
"Tcemie'melox (with one of those little hats on top of the "o"). Teit
explains: "Burned or blacked people," or "burnt country people"; so named
because they were supposed to have come from under the water in the country
of the sun, where it was very hot, and where they were burned or blackened;
or because thought to be the offspring of sun and water. . .

 "Ne'gel (from French). . .

"Kenkanaho (said to be a word introduced by half-breeds of the fur
companies)."

 And for Chinese:

"Skomkeme'mps ("lump at the back of head," on account of the cue tied up at
the back of the head). . . Tee'namen (from English Chinamen)."

 neat, eh?
