Allen Walker Read is usually credited with tracking down the origin
of O.K.  (I forget what his conclusion was, though -- Old
Kinderhook, I think.)  You might want to check his writings on
the subject -- probably the reference is in a FAQ for LINGUIST
or sci.lang or some such list -- before pushing the Chinook
Jargon origin; even if Read is wrong, he wil probably have good
information about the earliest date of attestation.  I *think*
it might've been too early for CJ to be a likely source, but
as you can tell my recollection of Read's arguments is vague.
