Klahowya weght, tillicums,

Carlos Arnaldo Schwantes's book, "Columbia River: Gateway to the West" was
published by the University of Idaho Press (Moscow), with the Columbia River
Maritime Museum (Astoria, OR), 2000.

It's a nice coffeetable book filled with good photographs of the river from
its source at Columbia Lake, BC, to the ocean. The particular focus of the
essayist is the river's transportation history, but there is some good
treatment of other important factors, such as the indigenous tribes of the
region and their Chinook Jargon. You'll get a good idea of how and to what
unimaginable scale the river has changed. This would be a thought-provoking
Christmas present for anyone on this list or our fellow-travelers.
