Yes, another version, same incident. This incident took place on December
10, on the south coast, when Clark was looking for a place to make salt. The
quote is not attributed to a named individual, but to the various Clatsops
who witnessed the shooting of the ducks and came to see the new type of gun.

Concomly was a chief of the Chinooks, on the north side of the Columbia. He
is mentioned, for example, in Clark's journal of 20 November (Com com mo
ly), and later by Franchere (Concomly or Comcomly). My original inquiry was
prompted by the fact that E.H.Thomas states that L&C recorded in their
journals that *Concomly* said "Waket commatux" to them. I have found no such
quote attributed to this individual.

Of course, since the words are the same, this does not affect our general
picture of CJ as it existed during L&C's visit. But since I am looking for
very rare scraps of information, I was disturbed to think that I might have
missed one. It begins to look as though this one is actually a kind of
artefact created by Thomas, putting words from one place in the mouth of an
individual from another.
