origin of "quimnut"

- hoping for a little help.
a friend-of-a-friend who does a television column about language for the french-language arm of the canadian broadcasting corporation is interested in the origin of saumon quinnat (i.e. the french term for chinook salmon), which derives from "quimnut" salmon, the origin of which is a mystery to her (and me).
any thoughts anyone?
