Thanks to Tina Wynecoop for bringing the following to this group's attention:

The _Oregon Historical Quarterly_, Fall 2000 issue, i.e. Vol. 101, no. 4, contains SuAnn Reddick's article "The Evolution of Chemawa Indian School:  From Red River to Salem, 1825-1885" (begins on page 444).  On page 445, after a quote from Horace S. Lyman's 1900 interview with Louis Labonte of French Prairie, Oregon, about the pronunciation of the name 'Chemawa', there's a quote from the Chemawa Indian School's annual, _The Teepee_, circa 1930:

"It is said that the word 'Chemawa' is from the Calapooia language meaning 'a place where no one lives.'  And again it is claimed that the name is from the Chemeketa tribe of Indians and means 'Happy Home.'  There has also been advanced the theory that the name was taken from the Chinook language [CJ -- Dave] and that originally the name was 'Chewawa' the 'che' meaning new and 'wawa' talk or language -- in other words, 'new education.'  In the course of time it is suggested that somebody blundered and the first 'w' in 'Chewawa' got changed to an 'm' thus making the name 'Chemawa,' as at present known to all."
