Hypothetical 'Chemawa' link with CJ

The late Esther LaBonte, one of the Grand Ronde elders from whom I recorded Jargon back in the early 80s, told me that she believed the name was Jargon "Chewawa":  and I had thought the idea was hers alone.  Actually, though, cha- is the Kalapuyan place-name indicator, and mee7wa is a low, marshy place prone to flooding during the wet months.  cha-mee7wa was a Kalapuyan placename recorded for three different locations--or quite likely more, considering the nature of the Willamette Valley before dyking and draining.
