everyone has been very helpful. thanks lots; our friend is considering
something for radio-canada on wawa now.
in the meantime, it's quite true what dave says about terms for salmon
crossing linguistic boundaries. the various coast salish terms for sockeye
are remarkably similar to the chilcotin, for instance. apart from chinook,
sockeye, and coho - and even then it can be fuzzy - the common terms for
salmon have lost the aboriginal antecedents. however, the latin names have
not: onchorhynchus tschawatcha, o. kisutch, o. keta, o. nerka, etc., all
derive from the kamchadal language and from the kamchadal terms for the same
salmon - or at least attempts by krashinnikov and walbaum to write the
kamchadal words in english, anyway.
thanks again.
tg.
