Dave Pentland (Univ. Manitoba expert in Ojibway & Cree) writes:

Given the firm identification of the speaker (in _Annals of Astoria_ p.
25) as "Sauteaux or Knistineuax [sic]" (Ojibway or Cree), and the
presence of nibi, identical with the Ojibway and Cree word for 'water',
I would venture to say the name is very probably Algonquian.
