In the journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition (1803-6), "squaw" is
almost always used in the sense of "Indian woman/wife" with no
pejorative nuance, e.g.

[T]he squaw busied herself in serching for the wild artichokes which the
mice collect and deposit in large hoards.

I saw maney Squars engaged Splitting and drying Salmon.

The Chief & the Squaws & children are awarey of their journey. Children cry.

In one Camp found 3 Squars & 3 young ones.
