A possibility exists in a Sahaptian link. The word for deer is:
'ímes 'deer' (Nez Perce)
yáamash 'mule deer' (Sahaptin)
one far-fetched theory states that the term was borrowed in ancient
times into the eastern region (algonqian?) and later formed the modern
representation such moose, etc. Ultimately, this leads us back to
/musmus/.
i've been searching high and low for the original article by the
linguist Goodard. it is in a very, very remote publication that i
could never get my hands on.
