Volcano's glacier closer to getting name

...

An hour after steam blew through the glacier on Mount St. Helens, seven
people met to crack a volcanic puzzle:

What should we call that hunk of ice?

In Olympia on Friday, the Washington State Board on Geographic Names
whittled 14 proposed names down to four finalists: Crater, Spirit,
Tamanawas or Tulutson Glacier.

Crater Glacier is what most local scientists call the ice now, board
executive secretary Tim Gregg said. The Cowlitz tribe suggested Tulutson,
their word for ice. The two others refer to the volcano's spiritual meaning
for some native tribes, he said: "Tamanawas" comes from Chinook jargon
for "spiritual guidance."

...

Once the state picks, a U.S. board must approve the name. That could push a
final decision to 2006.

"It may have melted by then," Gregg joked. -- Andy Dworkin
