I can't say anything about the Salish possibilities, but Bill Bright's
new _Native American Placenames of the United States_ says s.v.
Tamanawas Falls: "Chinook Jargon <ta-mah-no-us>..'guardian spirit,
magic, luck, supernatural power'; probably from Sahaptin, containing
/tama-/ 'supernatural power'. Bright cites McArthur's _Oregon Geographic
Names_ and a personal communication from Dale Kinkade.
