Hypothesized by some as coming from CJ "copasenee" courtesy of Dr. Donald 
L. Martin....

...a word or words unfindable in CJ dictionaries...

...OED Supplement II & Flexner indicate it's actually probably southern US 
Black, maybe from French "coupersetique"....

Sanely notes "Had this word not hazarded an appearance in Canada, no one 
would have considered Chinook jargon a source."  

About KANAKA:

This article also mentions James Sledd's 1978 derivation of "Canuck" 
from "Kanaka", nice to know the attribution...
