Schuhmacher 1977

In the International Journal of American Linguistics 43(1):64-65 (January 
1977), W.W. Schuhmacher has a brief note "On the Three Northwest Indian 
Words in Heinrich Zimmermann's Reise um die Welt".  Zimmermann was 
traveling with Captain Cook; his book was published in German in 1781.  

The three words are <makuk> "to buy", <tschibocks> "good", and 
<tschikimli> "big nail".  

These are clearly Southern Wakashan, as WWS notes.  ("Nootka".)  He also 
suggests the possibility these may have been recorded outside Nootka 
territory.  That's indeterminate.  

WWS also notes that Zimmermann may have misunderstood <tschibocks>, which 
could actually be Cook's <Tseea'poox> "a hat".  I'd add another reason to 
suspect misinterpretation: Zimmerman's "gut" (good) could be simply a 
typographical error for "hut" (hat).
