Blue Heron's specifically.
By the way: I never knew the word Blue Heron as a child because my
family always called them "Bay Center Turkeys." Bay Center is the
Chinook Indian community where many of us come from in recent years.
This includes my family, my wife's family, as well as many well know
Chinooks like Charles Cultee and Emma Luscier. I can't really say why
they were referred to that way.
Oh, and as for Scott inquiry about Robin's name-we usually say "pil
tutush" or "pil tutush kala-kala." I don't know that this is as taught
by our elders, but is a good fit. Some of us also use the word "skasayt"
which is one of the original words from the area.

Hayu masi, Tony, pus k'ilapay wawa !
In this case, the bird whose wing bones were used to make the long
needles for mats is any of them (herons, cranes etc.) or only a certain
species?

LaXayEm Tony,
I have just a little question: "yuLqat thiya7wit" refers to the
blue heron in particular or means "heron" in general? (are there several
species of herons in the area?)
Hayu masi,

I've never seen a specific word for this bird, either.
Not sure why there is not one, but perhaps this bird lacked usefulness
in a CJ context?

The only CJ expression referring (also) to the heron I
found in "The Chinook Book" of W.S. Phillips ("El Comancho"), under the
heading KULLAKULLA:
"Siah lepee kullakulla mitlite copo chuck illahee," "A
long legged bird that-lives-in the water-land (swamps)." (The crane,
snipe or heron.)
But I don't know about any specific denomination for the
blue heron.

The Jargon seems to have developed words for
specific animals. Does anyone know if there's a word for a Blue Heron
(also known as the Great Blue Heron)?
