Chokecherries? How many salted salmon? "Stop" = "have, be"?

I should've said the writer was in the Canoe Creek, BC, area.  

Whether he meant chokecherries or cultivated cherries is a point of great 
interest to me.  His talking about salmon in the same breath gave me the 
idea he might mean the wild species.
