The slang name for a suburb of Seattle, Ballard, Washington, is "Snoose Junction". It was generally populated by people of Scandanavian descent, and snoose was associated, and still is to some extent, as in Tina's post, with "jarheads", which opens up yet another line of linguistic inquiry.

"Lutefisk, lutefisk!
 Lefse, lefse!
 Hooray for Ballard!
 Ya sure, ya betcha"!

I knew immediately what the subject matter was. My grandfather came to the USA from Norway when he was 17 in the late 1800's. He settled in Kitsap County, WA (Poulsbo). He always had a tin of Copenhagen tucked inside his shirt, right below the heart - never in a pocket, and he would let us thump it if we were good.

He used to spit his snus or snoose, in my mom's commode and not flush it, and it drove her crazy.

Otherwise, what a good man, this Hans Martin Granmo.
