PhD RESEARCHER
Dept. of Modern Languages
Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium)

The Department of Modern Languages (English,
Dutch and German) at the Université catholique de
Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) has an
opening for a PhD research position beginning 1
October 2008. The position is available for two
years, normally extendable for another two years (four years in total).

The successful applicant will be completing
his/her PhD thesis within the framework of the
university funded FSR project 'Quantification and
approximation in business language. A contrastive
approach (English, French and Dutch)'. The
project aims to provide a detailed corpus-based
description of the words and phrases that are
typically used to express quantity and to
approximate quantities (e.g. 'lots of', 'more or
less', 'approximately') in business English,
Dutch and French. The successful applicant will
be working in close collaboration with the
members of the Institute 'Langage &
Communication' (Université catholique de Louvain).

Candidates must hold an MA degree or equivalent
in English and Dutch and/or French language and
linguistics and should have native or near-native
command of English and a good knowledge of Dutch
and/or French. Familiarity with corpus-linguistic methodology is an asset.
