Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in French ( Fixed Term) (L12167/RWS)

Applications are invited for a six month full-time post starting in January 2009 as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in French in the Department of Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies. The main teaching responsibilities will be to teach French language skills to undergraduate students on the Joint Honours half award in French and on the University Language Programme (ULP), and to deliver a prepared course on the business environment in France on the Joint Honours half award in European Studies 

This will include first and second year undergraduate teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations written in French or English. We would particularly welcome applications from specialists in translation theory and practice and there may be the opportunity for suitably qualified applicants to contribute to the MA in Translation (delivered by distance learning). In addition, suitably qualified applicants may be able to contribute to the teaching of French Area Studies (in French). 

The person appointed will be required to undertake up to 220 hours of taught classes or project supervision over twelve weeks of teaching, and undertake the normal duties relating to such teaching, including examination preparation, oral examinations and marking. The precise allocation of teaching will be determined by the Language Co-ordinator for French who is also the Head of Department. In addition the appointee may be expected to take on reasonable administrative responsibilities as required by the Head of Department, and contribute to materials development for distance learning. 

You will be responsible for: 

Teaching French language at undergraduate level and, if appropriate, on the postgraduate distance learning MA in Translation. You should have a good, first degree in French Studies. You should also have: 

*native or near-native proficiency in written and spoken French 

*some experience of teaching French in Higher Education in the UK 

*the ability to deliver high-quality teaching using both classroom and innovative teaching methods such as e-learning 

*the ability to work co-operatively in a team with academic and administrative colleagues, and to perform competently administrative tasks related to teaching. 

The successful candidate will also ideally have: 

*the ability to deliver an existing course on the business environment in France 

*embarked upon or completed a research degree in some aspect of French studies 

*experience of individual and/or collaborative research 

*evidence of recent publications, and/or plans for future publications.

 What I still don't clearly see is how all these copyright issues
would affect us. Not that I am losing my sleep over it, but it still
pertain to us. Corpora aren't really a new medium per se, but I see
how corpora could become a new ground setting technology and greatly
change the rules of the game in a near future

 I hope we, corpora-research people, are not going to have separate
"legal" incumbencies. Say you  "incorporate" a book, under the "fair
use" copyright law, you could then let people not only know about such
things as the correlation between past tense and adverbs of this
particular book in reference to all other books in that corpus and
functionally stratify these data as part of some editing framework,
but also easily and "creatively" use it . . .
