The RAVINE project (http://www.ark.cs.cmu.edu/RAVINE) at the Language
Technologies Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, seeks a
post-doctoral associate. The project aims to extract directly and
indirectly quoted expressions in news stories, construct a database
and user interface for browsing the news through quotes, and develop
natural language processing techniques for modeling the relationships
among these expressions (e.g., repetition, agreement, contradiction).
The aim of the project is to move away from viewing news stories as
collections of statements of fact to viewing them as collections of
claims made by different individuals.
The start date is flexible, though the target is September 2008. The
position will last between 12 and 18 months, depending on the start
date and contingent on continued funding.
Requirements
PhD in computer science, computational linguistics, or related area
Experience with large-scale system building
Expertise in statistical language processing, including syntax and semantics
