[Corpora-List] About Part of Speech in English and Chinese

Hello Fukun,

A proper noun is also a noun. If "noun" is Level-1 tag in a tagset, a proper noun can be analysed as a Level-2 tag, though some Chinese taggers make more fine-grained distinctions (e.g. person name, place name, country name, language name, organisation name), which are all Level-2 tags under the Level-1 tag "noun".

In the Chinese example "yi jian baozhuang jingmei de1 lipin" (a gift with a beautiful package), baozhuang is a clearly a noun, or to be precise, a verb used as a noun in context (to be tagged as VN). It cannot possibly be a verb because adverbials go before the verb they modify in Chinese. If the example is rewritten as "yi jian baozhuang de3 shifen jingmei de1 lipin" (a gift which is beautifully packed), then baozhuang "pack" is a verb while "shifen jingmei" (very beautiful) is a complement (i.e. the de structure).

Best regards,

Richard Xiao

Hi Huei-Chi,
I agree that "??" in this sentence can be tagged as noun or proper noun. Whether the ambiguity can be resolved depended on the rule. If you have a rule to tag it as a noun or proper noun in such contexts the ambiguity will be solved consistently and it doesn't affect the analysis of the phrase structure. It is not the same in the following phrase.

>2) The sentence ?? ?? ?? ? ?? is a NP whose structure is [[?M ?Q [?? V [??A ? DE ??N]]]] NP. So, the word ?? should be tagged as verb.

How do you parse the following 2 phrases and what is the relation between "??" and "??","??"and"??".

?? ?? ?? ? ??

?? ?? ?? ? ??

BTW, my analysis of the structure of ?? ?? ?? ? ?? is :

[??M [[[??N V ??A] ?DE] ??N]]NP

Best

Fukun

Hello,

I suggest two response for your questions:

1) Some ambiguities still cannot be solved. For example, the sentence ???? can be tagged by two ways:

? ?P ?V ?? N

? ? P? V ?? NPR

The word ?? can be a noun and a proper noun.

2) The sentence ?? ?? ?? ? ?? is a NP whose structure is [[?M ?Q [?? V [??A ? DE ??N]]]] NP. So, the word ?? should be tagged as verb.

Huei-Chi LIN
