PhD studentship in pragmatics and corpus linguistics
Department of Linguistics, University of Geneva
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Geneva, Switzerland,
invites applications for a doctoral research assistant position in
pragmatics. The successful candidate will be part of a group whose
research focuses on machine translation of pragmatic phenomena. The
candidate will participate in a Swiss-funded project on the modeling of
inter-sentential dependencies (connectives, anaphora, verbal tenses.
etc) to improve the output of machine translation systems for the
English / French pair.
Applicants will have received a Master's degree or equivalent in
Linguistics. Good knowledge of empirical methods in linguistics is
highly desirable. Excellent knowledge of both French and English is
required. Previous experience in natural language processing and
translation is a plus.
Funding is guaranteed for 3 years through a Swiss National Science
Foundation PhD studentship, with a possible extension for a fourth year.
Review of the applications will start immediately and will continue
until the position is filled. The appointment will start as soon as the
necessary work permits and documents are obtained, preferably on March
1st, 2010.
