Postdoctoral position in corpus linguistics
Department of Linguistics, University of Geneva

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Geneva, Switzerland,
invites applications for a post-doctoral position in corpus linguistics,
with applications to natural language processing. The successful
candidate will be part of a group whose research focuses on machine
translation of pragmatic phenomena. The candidate will participate in
the COMTIS SNSF project on the modeling of inter-sentential dependencies
(connectives, anaphora, verbal tenses. etc) to improve the output of
machine translation systems for the English / French pair. The tasks
associated to the position will include the selection of corpora, the
definition of annotation guidelines for markers of inter-sentential
dependencies, the design of tools for their semi-automatic location, and
the supervision of human annotators. The overall goal is to deliver an
annotated resource to be used for statistical learning by other COMTIS
partners.

Applicants will have received a PhD in linguistics, pragmatics or
natural language processing. Good knowledge of issues related to
language resources and their annotation is highly desirable. Excellent
knowledge of both French and English is required. Previous experience
with human or machine translation is a plus.

The position is offered for two years. Review of the applications will
start immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The
appointment will start as soon as the necessary work permits and
documents are obtained, preferably on March 1st, 2010.

statement of interest, a summary of the PhD thesis (with URL of the
document if available online), and names and email addresses of at least
three references. Electronic applications are strongly preferred. Please
