The Informatics Institute at the University of Amsterdam invites
applications for a fully funded post-doctoral researcher position in
the area of Statistical Machine Translation supervised by Dr. Christof
Monz.
Application closing date: September 30, 2010.
Starting date: January 2011 (earlier starting date possible)
Duration: 24 months
The research of the post-doctoral researcher will aim to model
statistically how user feedback and corrections can be integrated into
a statistical machine translation system to improve translation
quality.
The position is in the CoSyne EU project which focuses on machine
translation in an interactive environment. CoSyne is a multinational,
collaborative research project involving seven prominent partner
institutions in four European countries. The CoSyne project addresses
the challenges and opportunities that Machine Translation and
cross-language information integration face in a dynamic Wiki context.

Applicants must have a PhD (or be near completion) in computer science
or a closely related area.
In addition, a successful candidate should:
* have a strong track record of successful implementation and
productive research in natural language processing or machine
learning. A background in statistical machine translation is a plus.
* have a good knowledge of programming in at least one of the
following languages: C, C++, Java, Python, or Perl.
* enjoy working with large, real-world data sets
* have excellent communication skills both oral and written
The successful candidate will be based in the Intelligent Systems Lab
Amsterdam (ISLA) within the Informatics Institute at the University of
Amsterdam. ISLA consists of 20 members of faculty, 20 post-doctoral
researchers, and more than 50 PhD students. Members of the lab are
actively pursuing a variety of research initiatives, including machine
translation, natural language processing, (cross-language) information
retrieval, social network analysis, computer vision, machine learning,
and multi-agent systems.
