Ph.D. Bursary in English (3 Years full time)

The School of English at Birmingham City University invites applications for a bursary to support full-time research leading to the award of a Ph.D. in English. The value of the bursary is £13,290 per annum in 12 monthly payments of £1,107.50 for a period of three years commencing the end of June 2010. Fees are paid by the university and teaching for up to six hours per week, without

additional remuneration, may be available at the discretion of the Director of Studies and the Head of School. For the award to be payable, the successful candidate must have enrolled in the School no later than 1st July 2010.

Candidates for this award should normally have been awarded, or expect to be awarded, a Master's degree in a relevant English literary or linguistic field from a British or overseas university. Exceptional candidates without a Master's degree, but holding a first class Bachelor's degree in English, may be considered, dependent upon the academic coherence and promise of their research

proposal, and its consonance with the academic expertise of the School. Details of the academic interests and publications of scholars working within the School can be found on the School website at www.bcu.ac.uk/english. Doctoral research proposals in the following areas are especially welcome:

 

The Long Eighteenth Century (Literature 1660-1830);

The History of English;

English Lexical Semantics;

Literary Theory (any period).

 

Applications should consist of a Curriculum Vitae accompanied by a letter of proposal (running to no

more than 1 page of A4) detailing the prospective research topic. This should include an indication of

the research questions to be explored, the aims of the research and an evaluation of its relationship

to existing scholarship. Applicants should indicate their academic reasons for wishing to undertake

research in the School of English at Birmingham City University and should nominate the scholars

they may wish to work alongside. The names of two academic referees should be supplied. The

deadline for applications is Monday 17th May, 2010.

 

An application for a bursary should be submitted in parallel with an application for enrolment as a

research student within the university. Applications for bursaries should be submitted to the School

City University, Perry Barr, Birmingham, B42 2SU. An application to enrol as a research student in the

university should be made on the appropriate forms obtainable from the Research Administrator of

the Faculty of Performance, Media, and English, Liz Reeve (email Liz.Reeve at bcu.ac.uk) indicating

that an application for a Ph.D bursary in English has been made to the School of English. Interviews

will be held on Tuesday 1st June, 2010.
