The 4th TALKING ACROSS THE WORLD Conference
English Communication Skills from Commodity to Quality
November 25th (Thursday) - November 27th (Saturday) 2010
MANILA, Philippines
CALL FOR PAPERS
The 4th Talking Across the World conference focuses on recent research in
the O&O industry (Outsourcing and Offshoring). This industry is continually
growing at an amazing rate in both volume and the range of services offered,
and the need for good English language communication skills remains vital to
the continued success of the O&O industry. Within the O&O industry, Language
and communication are the main commodities used to provide services, and
theres a tremendous need for excellence in both the language (the commodity
in this case) and in the quality of communication. This conference focuses
on recent research related to improving and developing both language,
communication and the need for quality within the industry. The ideas shared
at the conference have enormous potential to impact and enhance business
performance and the market share for O&O. The research presented will have
direct implications for the O&O industry in areas such as:
Recruitment assessment of language skills
Training (both near hire and new hire)
Coaching and remedial training
Quality assessment and agent learning pathways
The 4th Talking Across the World Conference: English Communication Skills
from Commodity to Quality,
2010 provides a forum for academia and industry to collaborate and to tackle
some of the key concerns in English communication in the O&O industry by
sharing knowledge, developing partnerships and implementing successful
strategies for applying research and achieving best practices.
We are keen to invite academics and industry personnel who have been working
with English communication within the O&O, Business Processing Outsourcing
(BPO), Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO), Information Technology Enabled
Services (ITES) in all capacities to submit a paper for this conference.
Specifically, the conference will address the issues of:
1. Assessing language for work impact
This will cover papers related to language and communication assessment
practices in the O&O industry e.g. examples of how homegrown assessment
works in house and for what purposes; the role of commercially available
business English testing instruments.
2. Modes of adult learning in the workplace - This will cover papers related
to:
Theory: Adult learning principles
Training: Modes of delivery (e.g.: classroom based training- class/small
group/ individualized support; autonomous learning, e-learning);
Coaching: Stages of professional development (e.g. novice - expert level
capacity); coaching and mentoring.
3. Curriculum innovation and evaluation in BPO English communication
training - This will cover papers related to:
Research: how language research can inform the development of training
materials
Curriculum: the syllabus design process from planning to implementation to
evaluation; Train the Trainer: development of teacher education and
trainer/coaching support programmes.
4. Intercultural communication and its place in training - This will cover
papers related to: Intercultural awareness and its impact on the success of
outsourced O&O work; critiques of existing programmes in intercultural
training and ideas for more effective training and awareness raising for
culture.
5. Discourse analysis and linguistic research - This will cover papers
related to:
Linguistic analyses of different aspects of O&O interaction and transaction,
both spoken and written e.g. transcribed call centre exchange and email/chat
support.
6. Academic and workplace partnering - This will cover papers related to:
The interrelationship between education, both the tertiary and secondary
sector, and the workplace in the provision of employment related skills with
specific reference to language and communication skills.

Plenary papers will be 1 hour and all other papers will be 30 minutes Kindly
fill out the attached registration forms and send to egconf at polyu.edu.hk.
The deadline for submission is 24th September 2010.
Early Bird registration fee should be paid by 24th September 2010.
All registration fees must be paid by 18th October, 2010. Should payment not
be received, your name will be removed from the programme.
