POST DOCTORAL (RESEARCH) RECRUITMENT

Multi-year Research Position

Job Description:

The successful candidate for this position will have the chance to develop a world-class intelligent tutoring system called DeepTutor. DeepTutor is a dialogue-based tutoring system focusing on training students on complex science topics. In particular, DeepTutor focuses on the domain of physics targeting the topics of force and motion, gravity, and atomic structure. The DeepTutor system integrates the recent framework of learning progressions with deep semantic and dialogue processing techniques and advanced tutoring strategies that address core problems with tutoring such as the illusion of mastery. DeepTutor will lead to transformational shifts in current state-of-the-art tutoring systems' effectiveness.

Job responsibilities include among others the following: participate in all aspects of a large-scale educational technology with an emphasis on research, development, and implementation; lead the research, design, and implementation of various components of a dialogue-based tutoring systems including but not limited to dialogue manager, semantic interpreter, question generator, student model, and domain model; help with the design, implementation, and data analysis of various experiments needed to fulfill the mission of the project; interact with various members of the project team, supervise graduate students; publications and presentations; evaluate, install, and maintain software packages; and administer the computing infrastructure.

This position is for 12 months and is renewable for up to 2 years based on performance and availability of funding.

Qualifications:

A PhD in computer science and/or cognitive science or related areas is required. ABD candidates are encouraged to apply with the understanding of earning a PhD diploma within 3 months of hiring. Candidates must have a track record of computational linguistics and tutoring systems research. Experience with technologies in the areas of human language processing, machine learning, and virtual agents are needed. Knowledge of Java, C, and experience with cross-platform system administration is necessary.
