Research Associate in Spoken Language Translation*University of Sheffield* -
Faculty of Engineering, Department of Computer Science

*Job Reference Number: *UOS003437

*Contract Type:** *Up to 12 months

*Salary: *Grade 7 £28,251 per annum.

*Closing Date: *10 November 2011

*Summary:*

This research project aims to develop new techniques for automatic
translation between human languages, taking a speech signal as input in one
language and producing text in the other. The project will focus on areas in
which current technologies underperform, namely resolving incompatibilities
between the speech recognition component and the translation component. You
will look at ways of integrating the two systems to improve end-to-end
performance. It has the potential to greatly increase the usefulness of
spoken language translation, a technology in its infancy but with great
potential to make a positive impact to how people communicate.

This is an opportunity to work in a well-connected international team with
world-leading reputations. The appointee will be part of the Speech and
Hearing (SPandH), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning
(ML) research groups at The University of Sheffield. SPandH has developed
state-of-the-art automatic speech recognition systems that have repeatedly
shown best performance in international competitions (U.S. NIST) and are
publicly available (www.webasr.org).

The NLP group is well known internationally for its research, and is one of
the largest research groups in computational linguistics and text
engineering in the UK. The ML group is also very well respected, with
expertise in fundamental machine learning and a range of application
domains. This is an opportunity to work with two well-connected
international teams with world-leading reputations in speech recognition and
machine translation research. Excellent computing resources are available to
allow ambitious experiments with innovative ideas.

The successful applicant should hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a
related area, for example, machine learning, mathematics, automatic speech
recognition, machine translation or natural language processing. You should
have experience in mathematics/statistics and have programming experience,
for example, in C++ or Java and Unix scripting languages.

This post is fixed term for up to 12 months.
