UKP Lab, UNIVERSITY OF DARMSTADT, GERMANY
Doctoral Scholarship in Natural Language Processing
for Educational Applications
Deadline: 23.03.2012 (open until filled)
The Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing Lab at the Computer Science
Department at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany) offers a
Doctoral Scholarship "Using Natural Language Processing to Support
Self-Directed Learning"
The position is to be filled immediately. The scholarship has the
duration of three years. It entails PhD research within the UKP Lab at
Technische Universität Darmstadt, as well as a close collaboration with
the German Institute for Educational Research and Educational
Information (DIPF) in Frankfurt. Besides the project work, the position
offers the possibility of scientific qualification and training.
The focus of the project is on investigating novel approaches to support
self-directed learning with Natural Language Processing. This includes
the automatic generation of test items, for example for language
learning, controlling the difficulty level of generated test items,
automatic assessment of students, and finally giving feedback of how to
improve the learning. In order to allow conducting realistic user
studies in order to estimate the effectiveness of self-directed learning
based on Natural Language Processing, the PhD student will augment an
existing Web-based prototype with support for learning scenarios.
We are seeking a candidate with an excellent university degree in
Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or in a related field. The
candidate should be committed to high-quality research. He or she should
be willing to closely collaborate with computer scientists on the one
hand and educational researchers on the other hand. The scholarship is
EUR 1400 per month.
Technische Universität Darmstadt is an autonomous university with a
worldwide reputation in research and education, and seeking the answers
to crucial challenges of the future. The university's focus on
technology - from the perspectives of engineering, the natural
sciences, the humanities and the social sciences - ranges from basic
research to applications for daily life. The Ubiquitous Knowledge
Processing Lab was founded in 2007 and has become an internationally
recognized research group in the field of language technology and
Computational Linguistics. The hiring process is subject to the law of
the State of Hessen. The Technische Universität Darmstadt is an equal
opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications of
qualified women. Handicapped persons will be preferentially considered
when equally qualified.
Candidates should submit their application along with the usual
supporting documents (CV, academic transcripts, final thesis (can be
electronic)) and a first project proposal (up to 3 pages, including
abstract, overview of the intended research, research questions and
methods, and example work plan), as well as two suggestions of
professors as potential referees to
