Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL), is one of the UK's leading

inter-disciplinary training programme in the science and technologies
that are transforming the creative sector. Our aim is to produce
graduates who combine world-class technical and creative skills with a
unique vision of how digital technology transforms creative, economic
and social possibilities.

We have four PhD scholarships available (circa £15,700 p.a. including
all course fees), for direct entry to the PhD programme. Deadline for
applications is July 13th 2012. Interviews will take place on 17th- 18th
July.
Two PhD scholarships are allocated for open topics, and applications
from Psychologists, Sociologists, Linguists, Computational Linguists and
Cognitive Scientists will be welcomed.
Two are funded by DSTL and allocated to specific research areas:
1. Analysing and Influencing crowd behaviours though arrays of ad-hoc
mobile sensors: How do behavioural patterns propagate through crowds?
Can we influence crowd behaviour by providing real-time feedback and
interaction with users? You will collect social traces from mobile
sensor data at events, such as music festivals.
2. Drivers of Information and knowledge production in a Crisis
Situation; Exploring Cross Cultural Attitudes and the Shaping of Online
Behaviour in Crisis Situations. How are social media used to disseminate
and gather information during crises? How can we shape strategic
response strategies at a national level as well as cross-cultural
responses to crisis situations? Successful applicants for the DSTL
projects will require security clearance.
PhD criteria
To apply for the open topic PhD scholarships you must be a UK national
or EU national who has lived in the UK for 3 years.
To apply for the DSTL funded PhD scholarships you must be a UK national
or EU national and will require security clearance.
Also : be able to demonstrate academic achievement at the level of a
first class honours degree and excellent critical and analytic skills.
You should also have a clear aptitude for interdisciplinary research
including some programming or mathematical ability. We especially
welcome applicants with interests in: cognitive science, cultural
studies, experimental and social psychology, linguistics, media and
communications, political science and social computing.
