Open Positions in Computational Linguistics
at the University of Munich:
Senior Researchers, PostDocs, PhD Fellowships

The University of Munich (LMU) is repositioning and
expanding its activities in computational linguistics and
natural language processing (NLP). As part of this effort,
Prof. Dr. Hinrich Schuetze has been appointed Chair of
Computational Linguistics and head of the Center for
Information and Language Processing (CIS).  The institute
will focus on linguistically informed statistical NLP while
building on CIS's rich tradition in information extraction
and retrieval.

The University of Munich is one of the top research
universities in Europe.  It was the highest ranked
institution on several measures in the Exzellenzinitiative
funding program organized by the German national science
foundation in 2012.

Munich and the Upper Bavaria area are among the regions in
Europe with the highest quality of living. The area is also
home to a large number of high-tech, services and
manufacturing companies, including many that use NLP
technology.

The CIS team has the following openings.  Salaries are in
the range 30000-50000 euros and depend on the type of
position and prior experience.  The positions can be filled
for a variety of terms ranging from 2 to 5 years.

* eHumanities group leader.  The successful candidate will
develop and lead CIS's research collaborations with
linguistics and humanities at LMU and apply for research
grants in this area at the national and European level.
Teaching classes in CIS's computational linguistics Bachelor
and Master programs is encouraged.

* Senior researcher (``Akademischer Rat auf Zeit'').
Successful candidates are expected to develop a program of
research in their own area of interest and to apply for
research grants at the national and European level.  Job
duties include teaching courses in CIS's computational
linguistics Bachelor and Master programs.

* 2 PostDocs.  Successful applicants will conduct their own
research in the general focus area of the institute,
linguistically informed statistical NLP methods and their
applications.  Topics of particular interest include
sentiment analysis, information extraction, machine
translation and semi-supervised learning for NLP.  PostDocs
will participate in the supervision of doctoral students and
contribute to the institute's research projects.

* 4 doctoral fellowships.  These fellowships are funded from
a variety of sources, including German national science
foundation (DFG), university funds and industry grants.  The
research will be carried out in the general area of
linguistically informed statistical NLP with specialization
in one of four focus areas: sentiment analysis, information
extraction, machine translation and semi-supervised learning
for NLP.
