American Association for Corpus Linguistics (AACL)
Registration is now open (aacl.sdsu.edu) at a competitive price until
November 15th for the next AACL conference to be held in San Diego, January
18-20, 2013.
The conference starts with optional pre-conference workshops Friday morning
(1/18) between 9 a.m. & 12 noon, continuing with the opening remarks at 2
p.m. and sessions starting at 2:15 p.m.
The two pre-conference workshops you could choose from are:
1) 'Basic statistics with R' with Stefan Gries (University of California,
Santa Barbara)
This pre-conference workshop aims at linguists who would like to learn
about using the open source software and programming language R for the
statistical analysis of corpus data. The workshop leader will introduce:
- how to load data into R for statistical analysis;
- how to compute descriptive statistics such as frequency tables,
means/medians, measures of dispersion, correlation coefficients, and
distributions;
- how to compute basic monofactorial tests for each of the above
statistics;
- how to generate simple graphs representing each of the above statistics.
2) 'Creating a corpus of spoken learner language using CAST (Computer
Assisted Screening Tool)' with M. Trevor Shanklin (LARC, San Diego State
University)
This pre-conference workshop aims at any researcher who would like to build
a corpus using the online oral proficiency test CAST (http://cast.sdsu.edu).
Participants will receive researcher/admin accounts to access test results
in any of the 13 languages currently available: Arabic, Chinese, ESL,
Filipino, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian,
Russian, Spanish. The test exists at two levels (advanced and
intermediate) in most languages. The goal of the test is to provide
feedback to test-takers on their estimated ability to score at these levels
in an official ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview. At the conclusion of the
workshop, participants will be able to use the CAST framework for research,
administering their own tests or using LARC test results. In the workshop
participants will:
- access tests and download responses;
- correlate test results with demographic information;
- compare methods for analyzing and reporting on data.
Let us know if you have any questions.
