SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

1. ENLG 2013
-------------
Natural Language Generation (NLG) is a subfield of Natural Language
Processing that focuses on
the derivation of coherent text or speech from some underlying
non-linguistic representation of
information, such as databases or knowledge sources. Over the past several
years, NLG has
developed into a thriving area, with numerous applications which have both
theoretical and
practical interest. Contemporary work in NLG ranges from a focus on
specific tasks, such as
linguistic realisation of semantic forms and the generation of referring
expressions, to complete
solutions, ranging from data-to-text systems which summarise raw numerical
datasets to the
embedding of NLG components in multimedia and hypertext environments, or
interactive
systems. Recent work has also evinced interest in topics such as the
handling of uncertainty in
input data and its implications for the resulting text, the generation of
coherent narrative text, and
the handling of time. In keeping with developments in NLP more generally,
these topics are being
approached using a variety of techniques, from traditional, rule-based
approaches to data-driven
ones where machine learning and statistical modelling play a central role.

Given its focus on the generation of text or speech, the field of NLG has
clear links to other areas
of NLP, such as Automatic Summarisation, Machine Translation, and Dialogue
Systems.

The ENLG 2013 workshop forms part of a biennial series of workshops on
natural language
generation that has been running since 1987, providing a regular forum for
presentation of
research in this area, both for NLG specialists and for researchers from
related areas. ENLG is
endorsed by the ACL Special Interest Group on Generation (SIGGEN). The 2013
edition will take
place as an ACL workshop in Sofia, Bulgaria. It will continue the tradition
of ENLG workshops,
but also seeks to enhance the ties between the NLG community and related
communities. For
this edition, we especially invite submissions in areas dealing with NLG
and summarisation.

2. Call for papers and demos
------------------------------
ENLG 2013 invites substantial, original, and unpublished submissions on all
topics related to natural language generation. Topics of interest include,
but are not limited to:

- Affective / emotional generation
- Content and text planning
- Generation for embodied agents and robots
- Evaluation of NLG systems
- Data-to-text generation
- Lexicalisation
- Multimedia or multimodal generation
- Story-telling and narrative generation
- NLG for real-world applications
- NLG in linguistically motivated frameworks
- Personalization and personality of text
- Psycholinguistics and NLG
- Referring expression generation
- Surface realization
- Machine learning approaches to NLG tasks
- Text-to-text generation and summarisation
- NLG techniques for paraphrase generation
- NLG techniques for abstractive summarisation

This year, we also invite submissions for system demonstrations. Demo
papers should describe
implemented systems, which will be presented during demo sessions
throughout the duration of
the workshop.

3. Papers and formats
-------------------------
ENLG has three submission categories, long and short papers, and demo
papers:
- Long papers are most appropriate for presenting substantial research
results and must not
exceed eight (8) pages of content, with up to two additional pages for
references (these will be orally presented);
- Short papers are more appropriate for presenting an ongoing research
effort and must not
exceed four (4) pages, including references (these will be presented as
posters during the poster
session).
- Demo papers should be no more than two pages in length, including
references, and should
describe implemented systems which are of relevance to the NLG community.
Demo papers will
be included in the proceedings. Authors of demo papers should be willing to
present a demo of
their system during ENLG 2013.

The only accepted format for submitted papers is Adobe PDF. Submissions
should follow the
two-column format of ACL proceedings. Use of the ACL style files (available
from
http://acl2013.org/site/call.html) is strongly recommended. Reviewing will
be blind, so you should
avoid identifying the authors within the paper.

4. Submission instructions:

Submissions should be uploaded to the START2 website for the workshop (
https://www.softconf.com/acl2013/ENLG2013/).

Note that the submission system has been changed since the first call for
papers.

5. Important dates
-------------------
* April 19, 2013: Deadline for paper submission (long and short papers)
* May 24, 2013: Notification of acceptance of papers
* June 7, 2013: Camera-ready copies due
* August 8-9, 2013: ENLG 2013
